A Fate Inked in Blood - [4/10]

A flop in my opinion. A very forgettable story that doesn’t achieve anything or do anything well. It’s a romance/fantasy book that isn’t good at either, the fantasy world is lacklustre, nothing standing out in the world and nothing really that different. The romance is meh, it’s just the protagonist obsessed with this guy who says corny one liners and then at the end is revealed to have been playing her along this whole time. I wasn’t invested in any of the characters, I feel like if the author spent less time making the sex scene as graphic as possible and more time developing the story, the world, the characters backstory, it would’ve been much better. The thing I didn’t like, what was the point of this book? What is the message portrayed? Turn your back on your family for love? Be an independent woman, don’t fall to the ‘fate’ that youre just a weapon, but then blindly fall and follow this guy because he fingered you? Super random, super forced sex scenes. Probably ask me about this in a month and I’ll have forgotten about it.

I really enjoyed the dark tone of this book, the beginning was ambiguous enough that I was interested but starting getting too much where I cared less for it. I also really enjoyed the many directions this book took, changing locations, characters, storylines etc (a book needs to do that when its 1000 pages long!). One thing that got me lost was that there were too many characters and many times found myself lost and not knowing/caring who people were. Also, I understand that it's the point of the story, but there seemed no hope or point of these people living life. They are inevitably going to lose to the virals and die out as a human race. It would have been cool if there was an escape route or some alternative ending, because at the end of the day, the humans just got obliterated.  Author: Justin Crown

The Outsider - [8.5/10]

 'It probably wasn't his first smile since the police came to his door last Tuesday, but maybe the first real one'. I noted this line down because it shows how well Stephen King can show emotions and characters feelings in condensed, concise lines. (context, talking about a character whos brother had died and all the fake smiles and emotions he had to put up as a front for his father and funeral processions). For Stephen King standards, this book was okay, but for stories in general this was awesome. It was a really good concept and I absolutely love the metaphor of 'the outsider' who could just be anyone, as we don't truly understand what's going on under the 'masks' of deranged people. King's writing is exemplary as usual, however there was something with the story that didn't live up to his usual work. It seemed less tense, more flat than usual. Superstitious - [9/10]

 This book took me by surprise. I did not really expect to enjoy this thriller/horror book as much as I did. Being R.L Stine's first adult fiction novel, it was executed very well with the characters having a lot of depth and the relationships that Sara has where portrayed and written so well. Her infatuation with both her ex as well as Liam are understandable for the character that they portray, and her actions when they start to be weird are relatable which makes for an interesting read, she reacts in a way that I would so then I become victim to whatever story Stine concocts. The devil/demon was a bit corny, but in the whole scheme of the story with how the superstitions keep it at bay was cool little twist on the story. The way everything was executed in this book made it such a satisfying read, one of those books you close and just have a good feeling because it was a good story. Author: R.L Stine
