Night Shift - [9/10]

This was my first time reading a collection of short stories, and I think I may have set the bar too high starting with Stephen King. As always, he perfectly curates the story in a way which you fall into it. It doesn’t feel like reading. it’s more like you’re creating the story in your mind and following along. The short story format was really interesting, it’s like reading a long blurb of a story. You get the idea of it, it’s explored slightly and then it’s done. It allows for more creative concepts as it doesn’t need to be carried out throughout a whole book, as well as letting your own mind wander and fill in the gaps of the story

Very interesting concepts, some of which actually pretty chilling/scary and have got me thinking about what was explore even after the fact. Some highlights were the truck one, the ledge one, quitters inc and I know what you need. Keen to explore some more of this style of shorter stories.

 This book at face value seems to be a cheap and easy read. People of the world are blinded by a meteor shower and killer plants are on the loose. I started reading this thinking that it would be your average science fiction read, but it proves to be far from it. Whilst obviously having elements of science fiction, this book is provides an insight to humanity, and to me provides a very interesting commentary on modern society and conflict between ideologies and philosophies. It may seem like I am pulling your leg, but I encourage you to read this book. It is a short read, around 230 pages, however it is packed with many moral conflicts that will leave you contemplating the structure of things around you.  Author: John Wyndham

The Passage - [7/10]

I really enjoyed the dark tone of this book, the beginning was ambiguous enough that I was interested but starting getting too much where I cared less for it. I also really enjoyed the many directions this book took, changing locations, characters, storylines etc (a book needs to do that when its 1000 pages long!). One thing that got me lost was that there were too many characters and many times found myself lost and not knowing/caring who people were. Also, I understand that it's the point of the story, but there seemed no hope or point of these people living life. They are inevitably going to lose to the virals and die out as a human race. It would have been cool if there was an escape route or some alternative ending, because at the end of the day, the humans just got obliterated.  Author: Justin Crown

The Outsider - [8.5/10]

 'It probably wasn't his first smile since the police came to his door last Tuesday, but maybe the first real one'. I noted this line down because it shows how well Stephen King can show emotions and characters feelings in condensed, concise lines. (context, talking about a character whos brother had died and all the fake smiles and emotions he had to put up as a front for his father and funeral processions). For Stephen King standards, this book was okay, but for stories in general this was awesome. It was a really good concept and I absolutely love the metaphor of 'the outsider' who could just be anyone, as we don't truly understand what's going on under the 'masks' of deranged people. King's writing is exemplary as usual, however there was something with the story that didn't live up to his usual work. It seemed less tense, more flat than usual.
