IT - [10/10]

Image
This is the only book that made me feel actually scared turning it's pages. I literally turned a page and read a line somewhere in the book and gasped. I'm not kidding. This book is very, very long, Stephen King gets in a habit of giving the backstory of every little thing in the story. However, if you have the patience and the effort to read (which I definitely do), you will find a creepy, terrifying, interesting and just overall great story. The book shows an even more evil side to Pennywise that the movie seems to not capture, more than just a jump-scare, he strikes psychological fear. This is one of King's best works. Even as weird as the ending is.  Author: Stephen King

Fairy Tale - [10/10]

Image
This book was crafted really intelligently, it is essentially an adult fiction fairytale as the title would suggest. It is a feel good book that creates a feeling of nostalgia to your childhood, a time of innocence, which then takes a turn and morphs into this Great Escape type trip. It is truly a rollercoaster through an incredibly imaginative mind. When you think you know what's happening and you get a grasp of things, the carpet is pulled from under you and another layer of complexity and storytelling is added to this novel. It is truly marvellous how Stephen King continues to formulate these amazing stories, and I suggest you read this book and see for yourself. Author: Stephen King

Under The Dome - [10/10]

Image
A small town suddenly has a dome slammed over it, trapping everyone inside. Such a simple concept, difficult to master. Stephen King masters it. Exceptionally written, the complexity and detail in the book reads more like a live action replay of events instead of a complete piece of fiction. King does such an amazing job of creating characters that are so complex and relatable, as well as those that are so evil and have such demented yet logical mindsets. I could go on and on about this book and the characters, Jim Rennie and his god complex and need for control, Junior and his complete psychological breakdown, the Chef getting absolutely cooked off meth. I just implore you to read this book and experience the madness and chaos for yourself, the breakdown of individuals and society that takes place over only a week. Truly is another one of King's masterpieces. Author: Stephen King

Superstitious - [9/10]

Image
This book took me by surprise. I did not really expect to enjoy this thriller/horror book as much as I did. Being R.L Stine's first adult fiction novel, it was executed very well with the characters having a lot of depth and the relationships that Sara has where portrayed and written so well. Her infatuation with both her ex as well as Liam are understandable for the character that they portray, and her actions when they start to be weird are relatable which makes for an interesting read, she reacts in a way that I would so then I become victim to whatever story Stine concocts. The devil/demon was a bit corny, but in the whole scheme of the story with how the superstitions keep it at bay was cool little twist on the story. The way everything was executed in this book made it such a satisfying read, one of those books you close and just have a good feeling because it was a good story. Author: R.L Stine

Day of the Triffids - [9/10]

Image
This book at face value seems to be a cheap and easy read. People of the world are blinded by a meteor shower and killer plants are on the loose. I started reading this thinking that it would be your average science fiction read, but it proves to be far from it. Whilst obviously having elements of science fiction, this book is provides an insight to humanity, and to me provides a very interesting commentary on modern society and conflict between ideologies and philosophies. It may seem like I am pulling your leg, but I encourage you to read this book. It is a short read, around 230 pages, however it is packed with many moral conflicts that will leave you contemplating the structure of things around you.  Author: John Wyndham

Night Shift - [9/10]

This was my first time reading a collection of short stories, and I think I may have set the bar too high starting with Stephen King. As always, he perfectly curates the story in a way which you fall into it. It doesn’t feel like reading. it’s more like you’re creating the story in your mind and following along. The short story format was really interesting, it’s like reading a long blurb of a story. You get the idea of it, it’s explored slightly and then it’s done. It allows for more creative concepts as it doesn’t need to be carried out throughout a whole book, as well as letting your own mind wander and fill in the gaps of the story Very interesting concepts, some of which actually pretty chilling/scary and have got me thinking about what was explore even after the fact. Some highlights were the truck one, the ledge one, quitters inc and I know what you need. Keen to explore some more of this style of shorter stories. Author: Stephen King

The Outsider - [8.5/10]

Image
'It probably wasn't his first smile since the police came to his door last Tuesday, but maybe the first real one'. I noted this line down because it shows how well Stephen King can show emotions and characters feelings in condensed, concise lines. (context, talking about a character whos brother had died and all the fake smiles and emotions he had to put up as a front for his father and funeral processions). For Stephen King standards, this book was okay, but for stories in general this was awesome. It was a really good concept and I absolutely love the metaphor of 'the outsider' who could just be anyone, as we don't truly understand what's going on under the 'masks' of deranged people. King's writing is exemplary as usual, however there was something with the story that didn't live up to his usual work. It seemed less tense, more flat than usual. I think maybe because the story was not as relatable (for me at least). The thing with Stephen ...

Christine - [8/10]

Image
It's a car about an evil car that goes around killing people. And it's a good book. Stephen King can really make a book about anything and make it thrilling, interesting and just plain good. It is a goofy concept that plays out to make you bite your tongue on any ill words you may have said about this book before reading it. The book itself is self conscious, as it isn't a young adult fiction book that is peaches and cream, haha a killer car is on the loose. It is the grim reality of the real life consequences and actions of individuals if this in fact a real thing. King doesn't miss. Except for The Dark Tower. That sucked. Author: Stephen King

Thunderhead - [7.5/10]

Image
This book is a very solid read and was interesting throughout. It follows Nora Kelly, an archaeologist who follows in her fathers footsteps to discover a hidden treasure deep in the canyons of Utah. The book had me on edge throughout, some parts written so well that it caused me legitimate fear. It flirts with a bit of 'sci-fi', curses and similar stuff, but it does it in a way where it seems real and even had me questioning if these things could happen in real life. The book is crafted in a way that incorporates lots of themes without dragging any of them out. A really solid book that was unexpected for me, I found it for a dollar at a thrift store. Would recommend for a quick read if you're looking for a good thriller. Authors: Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

The Shining - [7/10]

Image
I'm a big fan of Stephen King, but I do not really get the hype around this book. It is a good read do not get me wrong, it has very interesting ideas and it's a King book, so of course it will be written to a high level. It just did not have that factor that really drew me into the book. The portrayal of Jack as a father and his battle with alcoholism is very intriguing, it holds the book up, but for me there really isn't much in here that I would write home about.  Author: Stephen King

The Passage - [7/10]

Image
I really enjoyed the dark tone of this book, the beginning was ambiguous enough that I was interested but starting getting too much where I cared less for it. I also really enjoyed the many directions this book took, changing locations, characters, storylines etc (a book needs to do that when its 1000 pages long!). One thing that got me lost was that there were too many characters and many times found myself lost and not knowing/caring who people were. Also, I understand that it's the point of the story, but there seemed no hope or point of these people living life. They are inevitably going to lose to the virals and die out as a human race. It would have been cool if there was an escape route or some alternative ending, because at the end of the day, the humans just got obliterated.  Author: Justin Crown

Salem's Lot - [7/10]

Image
Salem's Lot is a thriller/horror book about a town infested with vampires, following Ben Mears, an author who revisited the town after living there as a young child. This book was not as scary as other king novels like IT, however it was certainly creepy and had a very strong and interesting story throughout. It is a pretty decent thriller and I would recommend it as a pretty solid book to give you some chills. Author: Stephen King
